Extra 4. Xu Jingxian

Xu Jingxian always wanted to get stronger.

She was born in a wealthy family. In her hometown, she was considered a rich bride who was worthy of envy. At the same time, she was beautiful and delicate, truly deserving of her name.

So, she was supposed to live an ordinary life—she was supposed to get married and give birth to a son, just like any other girl in her position.

Yet she refused to meet these expectations.

When she saw a cultivator order their sword to slice apart a stone with a single gesture, this stubbornness flourished and took on a clearer form—she wanted to become a cultivator!

She also wanted to feel the wind fluttering her long sleeves, to come and go as she pleased like an immortal, to visit the most remote and desolate places in the world, to break free from the mortal cycle of life and death!

But it was not easy to make this dream come true. Her father could not dissuade her, so he used his connections to ask Xie Chunxi, the mentor of the Daoist Temple of the Imperial Palace to accept his daughter as a disciple.

Unexpectedly, as soon as Xie Chunxi saw Xu Jingxian, he declared that she was not suitable for cultivation due to her “charming bones”. Even if she forced her body to cultivate, she could easily go astray and become a demonic cultivator that would harm the human world.

Xu Jingxian was enraged. Without an ounce of respect for the boundary between the worlds of mortals and cultivators, she scolded Xie Chunxi for being old-fashioned and stubborn enough to judge someone based on their appearance. She also said that a narrow-minded person like him was destined to have limited success and never reach the level of a grandmaster.

Xie Chunxi regarded this common girl that acted like everyone was beneath herself before she had even started to cultivate. He did not hurt her. He only sneered and said, We’ll see if you survive till then. I’ll send everyone I know a note to warn them against accepting such an egotistical disciple like yourself.

It felt great to vent like this, but in the end, Xu Jingxian was driven out of the Daoist Temple of the Imperial Palace.

The girl was scared out of her wits. She took this too hard and cried while squatting under the palace gates.

But she was lucky. Someone was passing by the gates at that time, and they gasped.

“Why is such a young girl crying here? Where is your family?”

Xu Jingixian raised her head and saw the gentle face of the person who had spoken.

The woman was dressed in a dark green dress. Her smile was clear and bright and felt as if the full moon was shining upon Xu Jingxian’s face.

Xu Jingxian was full of resentment that she could no longer repress, so she told the entire story to this stranger.

The woman smiled: “What’s wrong with this? If you’re not going to give up, follow me. I’ll spend several days teaching you. Even though I’m not one of the finest masters, I can still teach you a couple of techniques to protect yourself. This will be more than enough for you to understand whether you can bear the suffering of cultivation. If you regret your decision, it won’t be too late to turn back.”

Xu Jingxian said timidly: “But I was born with charming bones…”

The woman answered calmly: “Nothing can determine your future for you. Even if the heavens wants you to become a demon, it is helpless against your determination if you’re dedicated to Buddhism. My husband and I have been in seclusion for a long time. You don’t even have to think of me as your master, but this accidental meeting between us has been fated.”

Xu Jingxian froze for a moment. She could not help but reach out and grab the woman’s hand before she finally remembered to ask: “Sister, what is your name?”

“My name is Chi Bijiang.”

Extra 5. Yao Wangnian

“You came back.”

The man who had been bending over while watering flowers turned back and realized that his daoist companion had brought over a girl.

“This is?”

“Her name is Xu Jingxian. I met her in front of the gates of the Daoist Temple of the Imperial Palace.” Chi Bijiang smiled weakly, “Xie Chunxi said that he won’t accept her because she was born with charming bones and mocked her. The girl is obviously sad. I was afraid that some bad guys might pick on her so I brought her with me.”

“The Daoist Temple of the Imperial Palace?” The man lowered his head, thought for a moment and also smiled, “Speaking of which, years ago, daoyou Jiufang fought our enemy under the disguise of a disciple of the Daoist Temple of the Imperial Palace. It’s unfortunate that it was only a disguise—otherwise, the Daoist Temple of the Imperial Palace would have achieved great fame.”

Xu Jingxian did not understand a word of what was said.

The man coughed and straightened up. However, he still could not help but bend over slightly which made his back slightly hunched.

Chi Bijiang let Xu Jingxian’s hand go and walked over to pat him on his back in a routine way.

“Did you train again this morning?” She said angrily, “How many times have I told you not to test your luck? Why do you never listen to me?”

“I want to live a little longer so that I can at least accompany you for a couple more years.” The man was looking at her very gently. Even though he was handsome, it was now obvious that he was older than Chi Bijiang.

Even though Jiang Li was lucky enough to survive that battle, Luomei had planted a demonic heart inside his mind which could not be completely eliminated by any means. He could only suppress his cultivation. After a long period of time, he had spent too much mental and physical force on this. His cultivation had not progressed at all, and he could not maintain his youthful appearance for hundreds of years like other cultivators.

But Chi Bijiang was completely unconcerned by this fact. Their current peaceful life was the greatest happiness they could have, considering how much they had been through to achieve it. If one day Jiang Li was to pass on, she was determined to follow him.

“Shixiong came by.”

As if he felt it, Jiang Li suddenly raised his head and looked to the side.

Chi Bijiang looked in the same direction, but only saw that a new shadow had appeared under the blossoming pear tree.

A cold ghost qi flowed over in threads.

Xu Jingxian was frightened. She ran over to the hedge to hide.

“Don’t be afraid.”

Chi Bijiang quickly came over and grabbed the girl, standing between the girl and the tree. She explained the situation in a low voice.

“My husband’s shixiong came over to pay us a visit.”

“He, he…” Xu Jingxian’s teeth were chattering and she could not speak coherently.

Why would he have such a terrifying aura? Obviously, that was not a human, but rather someone from the nether world.

“He’s a ghost cultivator.” Chi Bijiang finished her words.

Xu Jingxian stared at them.

She had only just embarked on the path of cultivation. She knew about the Dao, Buddhism and the demonic cultivation, but had never heard of the ghost path.

Could a person cultivate even after their death?

An icy voice made her tremble again.

“Where did you pick up this trash? Did you stoop to scraping the bottom of the barrel and accept anyone?”

A person in black robes slowly walked over. She could not see his face, and even his hands were hidden under the black sleeves.

Xu Jingxian hid behind Chi Bijiang but could not resist stretching out her head to look at him.

Sister’s husband is a human, so why is his shixiong a ghost cultivator?

She had these burning questions, but she did not dare ask them out loud, and only looked at him with bright, searching eyes.

“It seems that shixiong had a breakthrough again?” Jiang Li smiled at the guest.

The other man was both cold and grumpy: “And you’re still neither dead nor alive and simply stagnating. When you’re finally dead, follow my path!”

Jiang Li’s lips twitched: “I haven’t lived enough, yet you hope I die sooner. Who in this world would even understand such logic? Bijiang has recently created a new formation. If you’re interested, why don’t the two of us try it out in the afternoon? Let’s see who can break through it first.”

Yao Wangnian suddenly changed the subject: “Yesterday, the Wanjian Immortal Clan held the ceremony for electing a new master.”

Jiang Li froze: “What happened?”

Yao Wangnian: “Don’t you have any regrets?”

After the battle in the Zhenrong Mountain Villa all these years ago, even though Jiang Li survived, he could not get rid of the demonic heart which made him a hidden threat. He did not want to follow Luomei’s path, so despite the persuasion of the disciples of his sect to stay, he handed over the position of the clan master to his shidi resolutely and traveled far away with Chi Bijiang. Since then, they had stayed away from all worldly affairs.

Many years had passed since then.

Yet Yao Wangnian would still come visit them from time to time.

He was cold and never said any kind words.

But Jiang Li knew that his shixiong was actually the most affectionate type of person.

It was inevitable that the Wanjian Immortal Clan had started declining. But Jiang Li himself, who was someone who was supposed to have died a long time ago, was fortunate enough to survive and even lived in seclusion with the one he loved. What could he possibly be unsatisfied with?

Moreover, he never really wanted to be a clan master. Luomei’s comment on this matter was absolutely right.

His teacher said that even though Jiang Li had the talent, he did not have the ambition.

As Jiang Li thought about it today, he realized that Luomei was speaking the truth.

He watched Yao Wangnian scowl as he found fault with everything the little girl did, criticizing her every movement till she almost cried. Tears formed in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall down. Yet, Jiang Li only smiled.

Everything is great now.

  3. This is why I can’t take time related stories 😭 it’s like, idk, everyone died, and only the main characters remained. Can only say goodbye to their party and journey. Mc also thinking only ml remained till the end, making me wonder if Keiyi felt like a joke all throughout //chokes

Nevertheless, it’s great for the novel to show us that they’re in peak state. Not bound by time and the world. They can have no start and leave no traces. Can even travel at any point and alter. Wonder if they had predecessors 🤔

It’s also heartwarming to see how Xiao Xu avoided her demonic path by meeting Xiao Chi. Wonder what happened to that, was it xiao Fang? 😅 ..anways, What fate! And it’s them all gathered together 😆 And that glimpse of what became of them when compared to the previous version/timeline. Good for them all! No end of the world and BEs

Thank you very much for your time and work 💖 all those references and some end of the chap tn tidbits of your irl happenings. Thank you for coming this far and completing this work 💖

For translator, admittedly I don’t read a lot of translated danmei, but honestly, Estranged was one of the best translations I ever read!
I think Estranged universe itself was very complex, but you managed to translate it well that I could understand the intricate that was this story.

I believe even after this I read a lot more danmeis, you will be remain one of the best.

Thank you, and good luck for your future works, or life in general. I wish you well 🩷

  8. Thanks for the translations! ❤️

I’m torn about this novel because I like the first half better than Thousand Autumns, but the second half is just… Huh. Too many things not really explained/settled. So for now, my ranking of MXS works would be:

    1. Fourteenth Year of Chenghua
    2. Peerless

But the one thing I really like about this novel are the quotes. Especially how profound Yun Weisi and Changming would use words when describing what they mean to each other.

  9. so the key for xu jingxian’s cultivation is chi bijiang! because she was dead in the previous timeline, the girl deviated to demonic sect. i think even zhou keyi is not a demonic cultivator is also connected to this.

thank you so much for the translations!! amazing job❤️ the notes were immensely helpful in understanding this book. i can imagine how the author read much books in various genres.

this book gave me the feeling of “too much going on”, in a good way. even minor characters has names, as if reminding us that they are also a human living their own story.
the characters’ developments and hidden thoughts are also interesting to follow.

    highly recommended.
